Q: I am looking to get into better shape. I am 44, 5'9 and about 155 pounds. I am not overweight (obviously) and I belong to a gym. I try to run still about three miles, four times a week, but this time of year I get a little bored. Perhaps it has to do with going inside to work out, or just that I miss the outdoors. I did purchase cross country skis this year in hopes that I can enjoy the winter here (my second). I guess what I am looking for is more about putting better muscles on my body. I am a commited vegetarian and drug free, and usually use more freeweights than machines.

A: You say that you are a vegetarian. Are you Lacto-ovo or vegan? It's much harder as a vegan to take in the quality protein needed for muscle building. Although it can be done.
First step to build quality muscle is to examine your diet. You might want to do a food diary for a week. There are books in the nutrition section of your local book store that will break down food into calories from protein, carbs and fat etc. You need approximately 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass per day to build, for example.
As for exercise, the skis are a great idea for cardio. As for resistance exercise...mix both free weights and selectorized machines. Variety is the key. Instead of a book, i might be a good idea to look into hiring a personal trainer (ACE certified at least and with several years experience) for a few sessions. A trainer will help push you through any plateau you might have, give you instruction on proper form and technique and guidance on nutrition.
